Chiddingstone Church of England School

Educating for life in all its fullness - John 10:10

Maths

Chiddingstone Church of England School prides itself on developing strong mathematical skills within all pupils. Our maths curriculum follows the objectives outlined in the National Curriculum (2014).

Since 2016 we have adopted teaching maths in the ‘Singapore Maths’ style. This approach builds children’s mathematical fluency without the need for rote learning.

All new concepts are introduced using the pedagogical approach of Concrete - Pictorial - Abstract (CPA).

Concrete – a child approaches a new idea by acting it out with real objects. In division for example a child may share 12 biscuits among 6 children.

Pictorial – after sufficient hands-on experiences a child can now relate these experiences to representations – such as a diagram or picture of the problem. In the case of division this could be the action of circling objects.

Abstract – A child is now capable of representing problems using mathematical notations. An example of this would be 12 ÷ 2 = 6

At Chiddingstone School we teach using the Maths No Problem series of books which are based on Singapore Maths methods of teaching and learning for the English New National Curriculum.

Parents are asked to support their children’s learning by watching the videos below that carefully explain the concepts behind Singapore Maths and the ways in which all staff will be teaching numeracy. An understanding of the terminology used will allow you to support your child optimally.
