Chiddingstone Church of England School

Going Above and Beyond Together

Maths

Mathematics is an important life skill and, at Chiddingstone Church of England School, our intention is to provide high quality mathematical education in a way that engages learners and allows all children to experience success.

In line with the National Curriculum, we follow a mastery approach to mathematics based on the Maths No Problem programme in which pupils progress through the curriculum content at the same pace. The lesson structure is consistent throughout all year groups, creating a familiar routine which promotes collaboration, confidence and independence in young pupils. The spiral curriculum ensures that topics are revisited to consolidate understanding while increasing in complexity.

Adaptive teaching is achieved by emphasising deep knowledge and through individual support and intervention. Pupils are encouraged to develop a conceptual understanding of topics rather than relying on procedure. Maths journals give children freedom to examine, express and keep track of their thinking. Here, they explore and articulate their mathematical reasoning and, by presenting information in ways that others can learn from, develop their communication skills.

All new concepts are introduced using the CPA pedagogical approach:

Concrete – a child approaches a new idea by manipulating real objects.

Pictorial – following hands-on experience, a child can then relate this to representations, such as a diagram or picture of the problem.

Abstract – a child is now capable of representing problems using mathematical notation.

Children are encouraged to return to any of these stages at any point as they navigate their way to a solution.

From September this year, children in our Reception and KS1 classes will take part in a daily Mastering Number lesson. This programme has been developed by educational consultant, NCETM and is delivered separately from the main maths lesson. It is designed to ensure that children develop and secure good number sense so that they move forward with fluency in calculation and have confidence and flexibility with number.

Parents are asked to support their children’s learning by watching the videos below which explain the concepts behind Maths No Problem and the ways in which all staff at Chiddingstone School teach numeracy.
