Chiddingstone Castle

“An Englishman’s home is his castle”

Never has a phrase been more apt than to describe Chiddingstone Castle, the former home of the late eccentric English antiquarian, Denys Eyre Bower.  Still feeling like a gentleman’s home today, with its Tudor origins and delightful Victorian ’upstairs downstairs’ rooms, the Castle is open to the public to view Denys’ eclectic collections of art and artefacts – Japanese lacquer and Samurai armour, Ancient Egyptian treasures, Buddhist objects, Stuart paintings and Jacobite manuscripts.

This beautiful Historic House can be found along a winding path that leads from the pedestrian gates beside the Castle Inn in Chiddingstone village.  Originally the first cottage in the row of 16th Century village houses, it underwent a number of architectural changes across the centuries under the ownership of the Streatfeild family.  Set in 35 acres of glorious informal gardens that include a lake, waterfall, woodland and stunning Victorian Orangery, the Castle is now a popular venue for romantic wedding ceremonies, receptions and parties.

The Castle’s Tea Room is situated in the cosy Buttery with its adjacent sunny courtyard, and a traditional English cream tea served on bone china can also be enjoyed whilst admiring the distant views across the South Lawn.  The Gift Shop can be found in the old Well Tower and sells a wide range of carefully selected produce, gifts and crafts predominantly made in Kent.

The Castle, Tea Room and Gift Shop are open to visitors from April to October on Sundays to Wednesdays, and other days by appointment.  The Castle is available for weddings and functions throughout the year.

Don’t miss our annual Family Event Days, such as Ancient Egypt Day and Japanese Day, as well as the Country Fair and Christmas Fair.
